Ruminant Nutrition

This course aims to help you develop the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve optimal nutritional outcomes in beef, dairy cattle and sheep enterprises. 

The course emphasises an evidence-based approach to nutritional management and will focus on key topics including the development and physiology of the rumen, feed intake and its utilisation, the management and prevention of nutritional deficiencies and metabolic disease as well as the achievement of optimal nutritional outcomes. This course will be highly valuable to any veterinarian working in a farming environment or looking to develop their nutritional consultancy as well as those who are intending to study with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) in animal nutrition (ruminant).

Learning Outcomes

By successfully completing this course, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the basic principles of feeding ruminants for the production of meat, milk and fibre

  • Gain knowledge of the merits of a range of feedstuffs and pasture

Course Delivery

This online course comes with:

  • A set of detailed written notes, images and journal articles  

  • Self-assessed quizzes to test your knowledge and understanding

  • A discussion forum for conversation, debate and sharing cases with your peers and tutor

  • A monthly assignment where you will receive individual feedback and explanations from your tutor

  • A 3 day workshop where you will gain field experience and practical knowledge to apply back to your practice 

Pay as you learn

Choosing your DE course is a big commitment, so there’s no need to add further stress by paying your course up front. To pay as you learn, you will need a $1,000 deposit to secure your place, followed by 50% of the total course fee 10 days prior to course commencement date. We’ll arrange simple monthly direct debits from your credit card over 3 or 6 months.

Note: Payment Plan will incur an additional $250 administration fee, and Early Bird rates do not apply if you choose the payment plan option.

BSc BVSc (Hons) MVSt MAgribus PhD MACVSc

Paul is a consultant cattle veterinarian, ruminant nutritionist, and beef producer with post-graduate training in the intensive and extensive ruminant industries. His post-graduate training covers the disciplines of nutrition, health programs, reproduction, epidemiology, production and financial management and meat science. He completed his PhD on the interaction between nutrition and health in feedlot cattle in 2007. Over the last 15 years Paul has held various positions within the livestock and veterinary industry. Paul has lectured at Queensland, Sydney and at Charles Sturt University from 2007, where he is an adjunct Associate Professor. He also serves as Head Examiner in Beef Cattle Medicine and Production for the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists. He is currently the director of Australian Livestock Production Services, which consults on intensive and extensive cattle and lamb enterprises throughout the eastern states of Australia, as well as being owner/manager of a cattle trading enterprise. He is has written two distance education courses for the CVE, the long running Ruminant Nutrition course and the more recent Beef Production Medicine course.
