Traumatic emergencies are common presentations to both small animal and mixed animal practices.
The workshop comprises small group lectures and discussions on a variety of topics relating to emergency treatment and a 2½ hour practical session. Starting with the triage or initial assessment of an animal that has suffered trauma, we will go through the decisions involved in prioritising treatment and diagnostics. We will cover fluid therapy and analgesia options available to vets in practice. Some animals will require a transfusion: when to transfuse and what blood products to use can be a difficult decision. We will talk about the products available to practitioners and when to use them. Diagnostic imaging is an important part of the investigation of animals that have suffered trauma. A brief review of emergency imaging techniques will be given, along with some of the traps to watch out for. The afternoon cadaver practical session will allow participants to practice emergency procedures such as the placement of thoracic drains, central venous catheters, tracheostomy tubes, oesophagostomy tubes, nasal feeding and oxygen tubes.
