  • understand the basic principles of feeding ruminants for the production of meat, milk and fibre

  • assess rations and have a basic understanding of ration formulation

This course is highly valuable to any veterinarian working in a farming environment. It is designed to assist veterinarians studying for potential membership candidacy of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in animal nutrition (ruminant) but will be of benefit to all people in the field of nutrition.

The emphasis will be on practical learning and will cover all areas of interest in ruminant nutrition, giving you greater confidence and understanding of this discipline.

Dr Paul CusackDr Paul Cusack has had 18 years experience in Australian agriculture and 12 years as a partner in the family farming business, Nurung Pastoral Company. He has had nine years as a qualified veterinarian specialising in intensive and extensive beef production and dairy production (nutrition, reproduction, epidemiology, health programs, production management and meat science). He interned for one year and was then promoted to resident at University of Queensland Pastoral Veterinary Centre, Goondiwindi, while completing a Master of Veterinary Studies and teaching Year 5 BVSc students. He has been a lecturer in feedlot medicine and production for Year 5 BVSc students at the University of Queensland since 1993, and in Cattle Nutrition at the University of Sydney since 1996. He was journal editor and executive member of the Australian Association of Cattle Veterinarians in 1994-96, president elect in 1996 and president in 1997.

He undertook a tour of the United States, Canada and Japan in 1994 to study feedlots and beef marketing. He has been a full-time consultant cattle veterinarian and ruminant nutritionist since 1994 and he became a member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in ruminant nutrition in 1997. Paul is currently the Director of the Australian Livestock Production Services and undertaking a PhD in ruminant nutrition.
