Vanessa BarrsAfter graduation in 1990 and a stint in small animal practice, Dr Vanessa Barrs worked at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Sydney (UVTHS) from 1993 to 1999 completing a residency in small animal medicine, a Master’s degree in bacteriology and a fellowship training program in Feline Medicine. Vanessa achieved Fellowship of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Feline Medicine in 2000 and worked in University and private referral practice in London for two years. Vanessa returned to Australia in 2001 and worked as a specialist in private referral practice for two years. She was appointed Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Medicine at the University of Sydney in April 2004. She was President of the Feline Chapter of the Australian Veterinary College for three years and currently serves as Specialist Representative on the NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board. Vanessa’s current research interests include chronic kidney disease, alimentary lymphoma and molecular identification of novel fungal isolates in feline aspergillosis. Vanessa is Head of the Small Animal Medicine Unit at the UVTHS and co-directs of the busy feline referral service at the Valentine Charlton Cat Centre.

Mike Cannon

Mike CannonDr Michael Cannon is a well-known Australian avian veterinarian who has had tremendous experience over the past 32 years working with pet birds in private practice and in aviculture as well as wildlife parks and zoos. He is currently a partner in the Cannon and Ball Veterinary Clinic in Wollongong which services a wide variety of animals, covering dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, rodents, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, fish and invertebrates. Michael has held many important positions within the avicultural/bird industry and is a fine educator, having delivered lectures and seminars on avian and exotic pet topics to veterinarians nationally and internationally. Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Sydney in 1976. He was awarded Member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in the Chapter of Avian Health in 1984. He received his Graduate Diploma in Education from University of Technology Sydney in 1991.

Georgina Child

Georgina ChildDr Georgina Child graduated from the University of Sydney in 1980. She completed a residency in neurology and neurosurgery at University of California, Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in 1985 and became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (neurology) in 1987, then from 1986 to 1995 she was a research associate at Colorado State University. Georgina is a registered specialist in veterinary neurology and has worked in small animal specialist practice in Sydney since 1995, and is currently at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital, North Ryde and the University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Jane Day

Jane DayDr Jane Day graduated from the University of Queensland in 1994. After graduation Jane worked in small animal private practice Australia and UK. She completed a Masters in Veterinary Studies from Murdoch University in 2003 and Was awarded Membership in the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Radiology also in 2003. Following her interest area, Jane began teaching radiology and ultrasound at Queensland University in 2005, and currently teaches Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging at James Cook University. She is working towards completing her specialist training in the field, and has recently returned from several months training in the United States.

Jason was also Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for a VC backed consumer promotions start-up based in New York City. Jason has a Bachelor of Commerce from the UNSW and an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management in Chicago where he majored in Marketing and Entrepreneurship.

Annabelle Galloway

Annabelle GallowayDr Annabelle Galloway graduated with a BVSc (Hons) from the University of Queensland in 1981. After a few years in small animal and mixed practice, she joined the staff of the University of Queensland (UQ) as a small animal clinician. She started working in veterinary imaging in 1986 as a university tutor and gained MACVSc (radiology) in 1988. Annabelle continued working in imaging at UQ as a radiology registrar and in 1992 spent extended study leave in the USA, developing ultrasound skills in North Carolina, Colorado and California. Since 1993 she has continued to work part time in imaging at UQ while raising a large family. She was a locum at The Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, UK, in 2005. She has been a membership examiner for the ACVSc on five occasions and radiology chapter president for the period of 1999-2002. Annabelle continues to enjoy teaching and diagnostic imaging, particularly abdominal ultrasonography

William Hornof
DVM MS DACVR
William HornofProf Hornof received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from the University of California, Davis. He was named a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 1979 and joined the faculty of the University of California Davis that same year. He had a distinguished academic career with over a hundred publications in imaging and informatics. In 2004 Dr Hornof retired as head of Radiology and Hospital Computing at UC Davis to his current position as Chief Medical Officer for Eklin Medical Systems.

Simon Hurn

Simon HurnDr Simon Hurn graduated from the University of Queensland in 1998. Shortly after graduation, he undertook internships in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic and Hospital. In 2002, Simon achieved Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in Small Animal Surgery. Simon graduated with a Masters of Veterinary Studies from the University of Melbourne in 2003. Simon started a residency program in Veterinary Ophthalmology in 2002 and achieved Fellowship of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in 2006. Simon practices in a veterinary ophthalmology only clinic, All Animal Eye Services, in Mount Waverley Victoria. Simon is a registered Veterinary Specialist in the discipline of Ophthalmology, has presented scientific papers overseas and published peer reviewed scientific papers in Australian and international Veterinary Journals. Simon is the current Secretary and President-Elect of the Ophthalmology Chapter of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists.

Mike Lappin

Mike LappinAfter graduating from Oklahoma State University in 1981, Dr Lappin completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Georgia. After two years in small animal practice in Los Angeles, Dr Lappin returned to the University of Georgia where he completed a small animal internal medicine residency and a PhD in Parasitology. Dr Lappin was board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 1987. He is currently an Associate Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University and directs the Toxoplasma gondii Serology Laboratory. He has had multiple research grants funded and is the author of more than a hundred research papers and book chapters. Dr Lappin is an associate editor for the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the Compendium for Continuing Education for the Practicing Veterinarian. Dr Lappin has received the Beecham Research Award and the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award.

Catriona MacPhail
DVM PhD Diplomate ACVS
Catriona MacPhailDr MacPhail is a 1996 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed a small animal internship, surgical residency and surgical fellowship in soft tissue surgery and surgical oncology all at Colorado State University. Dr MacPhail became an ACVS diplomate in 2002 and has been on faculty at CSU as a soft tissue surgeon since 2004. She completed her PhD in cardiovascular surgery in spring of 2007. Dr MacPhail's primary clinical and research interests include upper and lower respiratory disease, wound management and reconstruction, gastrointestinal surgery, and minimally-invasive surgery.

Gabrielle C Musk

Gabrielle C MuskDr Gabrielle Musk graduated from Murdoch University in 1995 and after six years in mixed and small animal practices in South Australia and the UK she started a residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia at the Vet School in Glasgow.

She is now a European Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia working at Murdoch University and is part way through a PhD based on respiratory physiology at the University of Western Australia.

Her particular interests include ventilation techniques, total intravenous anaesthesia, analgesic infusion regimens and undergraduate anaesthesia education.

Chris Preston
FACVSc Dip ACVS
Chris PrestonDr Chris Preston is a registered specialist in small animal surgery and runs a stand-alone referral practice in central metropolitan Melbourne. Chris completed his BVSc at Melbourne University in 1993 followed by two years of small animal practice. In 1995 he moved to Brisbane to work as a surgical intern at Queensland Veterinary Specialist Centre. From 1997-2000 Chris completed a three year formal residency training program at the University of California, Davis. He gained Fellowship of the Australian College in 2000 and also became a Diplomate of the American College the following year. Chris started the Animal Surgery Centre in 2001 and enjoys neurosurgery, soft tissue surgery and oncologic surgery. His special interests include stifle arthroscopy, total joint arthroplasty (hip, knee and elbow) and intraoperative fluoroscopically-guided fracture repair.

Annie Rose

Annie RoseDr Annie Rose graduated from the University of Queensland in 1994, and spent the next two years in small animal practice in Canberra. Annie then completed a two-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at The University of Melbourne Clinic and Hospital, and during this time she developed an interest in veterinary diagnostic imaging. Annie worked in the radiology sections at The University of Melbourne and The Ohio State University during 1999. Annie has been working at The University of Queensland Veterinary Teaching Hospital since 2000. She is currently a registrar and her duties include clinical radiology and undergraduate teaching.

Howard Seim
DVM DACVS
Howard SeimDr Seim is a 1975 graduate of Washington State University. He completed an internship at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and a completed a two year surgical residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. From there he went to Colorado State University and has been on the surgical staff since 1978. He is currently Professor and Chief of Small Animal Surgery. Howard obtained Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1983. Dr Seim has presented numerous papers and published several articles and chapters in gastroenterology and neurosurgery. He is currently involved in several research projects concerning the development of spinal fusion models. Dr Seim received a University award for instructional innovation in 1995. Howard authored the neurosurgery section of the text Small Animal Surgery, Fossum editor, Mosby Yearbook, Inc. April 1997.

Andrew Turner
BVSc FACVSc (Veterinary Ophthalmology)
Andrew TurnerDr Andrew Turner graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1973. After working in mixed and equine practice for 20 years Andrew achieved Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in the discipline of Surgery of Horses. In 1994 Andrew undertook a residency program in Veterinary Ophthalmology with Dr. Rowan Blogg, the founder of Veterinary Ophthalmology in Australia. Andrew achieved Fellowship of the Australian College of Veterinary Ophthalmology by examination in Veterinary Ophthalmology in 1997. Andrew practices with Dr. Simon Hurn in a specialty Veterinary Ophthalmology clinic called All Animal Eye Services, in Mount Waverley Victoria. Andrew is a registered Veterinary Specialist in the discipline of Ophthalmology, has presented scientific papers overseas and published peer reviewed scientific papers in Australian and international veterinary journals.

Dayle Tyrrell

Dayle TyrrellDr Dayle Tyrrell is a graduate of Murdoch University and has worked in university and private practice in Australia, England & Zimbabwe. She completed a residency training program in diagnostic imaging at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic and Hospital in 2005. Dayle became a Fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Radiology in 2007 and she is a registered specialist in Radiology. Dayle is currently a senior registrar in diagnostic imaging at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic & Hospital. As well as having a role in undergraduate teaching she is also actively involved in providing continuing education to veterinarians.

Cameron Whittaker

Cameron WhittakerDr Cameron Whittaker graduated from Sydney University in 1989. After spending time in mixed animal practice, he completed an internship in 1992 at the University of Sydney. In 1993 Cameron started a residency in veterinary ophthalmology at the University of Florida, and in 1996 he was granted Diplomate status of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. He then worked at the Ohio State University as a visiting Assistant Professor. In late 1997 he returned to Australia for family reasons, and started to work with Jeff. Since that time he has become a business partner in Eye Clinic for Animals and worked for the Australian Veterinary Association (NSW Division). Cameron has co-authored three text books including Veterinary Ophthalmology 3rd Edition, Manual of Equine Practice 2nd edition, and Veterinary Clinics of North America, Ophthalmology edition. He has written almost a dozen peer reviewed papers in a variety of international clinical journals. Cameron currently provides medicine and surgery lectures and practical classes to students at the University of Sydney. He voluntarily also provides his services to the wild life at both Taronga Zoo in Sydney, and Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. Cameron has a special interest in cataract surgery, glaucoma, corneal medicine and surgery, and exotic animal ophthalmology.

Robert Wrigley

Robert WrigleyProf Robert Wrigley completed his Bachelor of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney, his Masters at Colorado State University and Diploma in Veterinary Radiology from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. He is rejoining the Faculty after a 28 year appointment as Professor of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging at Colorado State University. Dr Wrigley is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and has an international reputation in diagnostic imaging, including ultrasonography, digital radiography, CT and MR imaging. The first installation of Computed radiology in a veterinary facility in the USA was at Colorado State in 1991. Dr Wrigley was instrumental in creating the first imaging protocols to optimize the equipment for veterinary radiography. This refinement has progressed over the last 17 years through 4 generations of Fuji equipment. Also Dr Wrigley has developed the imaging protocols for CR and DR imaging equipment distributed by OREX and IDEX Labs. PACs and filmless imaging has been used in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State since 2001. Professor Wrigley is a co-author of the Handbook of Small Animal Radiological Diagnosis and has published many papers and made numerous presentations on diagnostic imaging including digital radiology.

David Vella

David VellaDr David Vella consults exclusively as an exotics vet in Sydney. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1992, and a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 1996, both from the University of Sydney. David's interest in natural history began early in life. Growing up In Sydney's suburbia he was lured to the appeal of native avifauna and herpetofauna. His first four years of vet life were spent practicing in the UK, where his exposure to 'exotic' pets was greatly enhanced. Since graduating as a vet, the appeal of exotic veterinary medicine has engaged David to work on a range of exotic animals. He is particularly interested in small mammals (especially rabbits) as well as reptile and amphibian medicine and surgery. David now consults as a primary accession and second opinion exotic small mammal and reptile vet at Sydney's North Shore Veterinary Specialist Centre.

Sanaa Zaki

Sanaa ZakiDr Sanaa Zaki graduated from the University of Sydney in 1992. She became a member (by examination) of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists, Anaesthesia and Critical Care Chapter in 1997 and completed the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) at the University of Sydney in 2005. Since 1995 she has been teaching, conducting clinical research and providing clinical service within the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney. In her current position as Lecturer in Veterinary Anaesthesia she is Unit of Study coordinator for the Veterinary Anaesthesia course and Year 4 coordinator for the Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree. In 2008, Dr Zaki was appointed Director of the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Sydney. She is currently also undertaking a PhD looking at 'Understanding the Pain of Osteoarthritis'.
