The CVE's major 2012 feline conference

Information >>

A most engaging and informative talk on successful feline practice by Dr Gary Norsworthy opened the proceedings on Monday morning heralding five days of outstanding veterinary continuing education at our traditional February conference at the University of Sydney. Gary is joined by another of the world's best, Professor Jane Sykes, as well as a dazzling array of local speakers at an event that is providing participants a complete update on all aspects of feline clinical practice.

Dr Gary Norsworthy is a pioneer of feline-only clinical practice, and brings to the conference his vast experience in all aspects of feline clinical science: medicine, surgery, anaesthesia, critical care and practice management. Gary is perhaps best known as the author of several practical and authoritative textbooks on feline medicine (as well as a good number of peer-reviewed publications) and for his contributions to our understanding of thyroid and parathyroid disease in the cat. He runs the busy Alamo Feline Health Centre in San Antonio, Texas with two associates, embracing all aspects of feline medicine, diagnostic imaging and surgery.

Professor Jane Sykes, a famous alumnus from the University of Melbourne with a University medal and PhD (supervised by Glenn Browning and Virginia Studdert) and residency at Minnesota, is now well entrenched at UC Davis where she is a full professor, which is an amazing achievement for someone who isn’t yet 40! Jane is passionate about infectious diseases and has made many recent ground-breaking discoveries in relation to infectious diseases of small animals. She’ll be concentrating on the feline species in relation to viral, bacterial and fungal disease conditions, which are so import in feline practice.

Both Gary and Jane are experts in all aspects of feline medicine. While they are new to the CVE, they are well-known around the world for the excellence of their presentations, and for their contributions to emerging trends in disease management.

Jane and Gary will be supported by a bevy of local speakers: Mark Bilson, Paul Canfield, Sanaa Zaki, Heide Kloeppel, Linda Vogelnest, Graeme Allan, who will provide updates in key areas, such as anaesthesia, critical care, diagnostic imaging, ophthalmology and dermatology. And our very own Richard Malik will be on hand as Master of Ceremonies and to stimulate some lively discussion!

This is the first course devoted exclusively to feline clinical practice that we’ve run in a couple of years. Every small animal practice needs to have at least one vet at the cutting edge of this rapidly evolving area – here is the opportunity to get a fresh and thorough grounding in all the recent developments in a number of feline disease conditions, including behaviour and:

  • Successful Feline Practice
  • The Anaemic Cat
  • PCR – A Clinical Perspective

  • Managing Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Multi-Drug Resistant Bacterial Infections
  • Feline Infectious Diarrhoea

So join us at the Webster Lecture Theatre, downstairs from the CVE offices. It will be fun, and you’ll be able to use the new information in your practice straightaway.

The T.G. Hungerford Award Banquet

The T.G. Hungerford Award for Excellence is awarded annually and recognises a distinguished veterinarian who has displayed excellence in continuing veterinary education. The award was instituted in honour of the late Dr Tom Hungerford OBE and his enormous contribution to the veterinary profession and the Australian community.

The 2011 T.G. Hungerford Award will be awarded at a special banquet during this conference, on Thursday 16th February. Join us for this prestigious and very important night celebrating one of our very own!
