Anaesthetic Complications and Emergencies

with Sanaa Zaki and Gabrielle Musk

Next session: Date to be advised

Experience tells us that preventing a complication from occurring is often easier than treating it. In the anaesthetised patient, significant compromise of the cardiovascular and/or respiratory system can result in irreversible and life threatening complications. Diligent monitoring of the anaesthetised patient will not only reduce morbidity and mortality under anaesthesia, but also improve the quality of recovery by minimising post operative complications such as hypothermia and pain.

This course provides veterinarians the opportunity to refresh their understanding of applied cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, as it relates to monitoring the anaesthetised patient. Within this context monitoring techniques and equipment are discussed to assist the veterinary in the early detection of anaesthetic complications. Practical approaches to managing common complications such as hypotension and hypoventilation will be discussed. In addition, resuscitation and post resuscitation support are covered in the final module, providing veterinarians with practical strategies for improving resuscitation protocols within their practice.

Each module also refers to relevant articles from the scientific literature and helps participants develop a sound understanding with the use of case studies and self assessment tasks.
