The inaugural annual Dr Robert Dixon Animal Welfare Memorial Symposium was held on Thursday 8 September 2011 at The University of Sydney. Introduced by Professor Rosanne Taylor, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science and chaired by Professor Peter Windsor, the topic was “Should Australia export live animals for slaughter?” (download brochure).

The Symposium was a Question & Answer-style format and provided an opportunity for questions from the audience. Key participants in the discussion panel were Prof Peter Windsor, A/Prof John House, Prof Paul McGreevy, Dr Helen Scott-Orr, Dr Celeste Black, Mr David Crombie, Dr Bidda Jones, Ms Glenys Oogjes and Dr Mark Schipp. (MLA declined the invitation to attend.)

The 2012 Robert Dixon Memorial Symposium will be held 3.30-5.00pm on Monday 26 March 2012. The topice will be How should animals be used in the teaching of veterinary medicine and animal science?

Robert Dixon graduated from the University of Sydney in 1973 with a BSc(Vet) degree before completing his BVSc degree in 1974. Robert completed his PhD in 1980 in New Zealand and returned to the University of Sydney in 1983 to take up an academic appointment within the Faculty of Veterinary Science. For many years Robert held the Faculty position of Sub-Dean Animal Welfare as well as serving on the University Animal Ethics Committee. Robert impressed his friends and colleagues with his determination, passion, positive attitude and sense of humour as he battled with ill-health throughout his life. Robert's email signature finished with a quote from Mohandas Gandhi - The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
