Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Improve your diagnostic skills via case-based learning
  • Gain a greater understanding of the medications used to treat eye problems
  • Gain greater confidence in handling ophthalmology cases
  • Learn optimal medical and surgical management methods for a variety of presenting problems.

Modules

  1. Method of eye examination, breed predisposition
    In this module we cover the basics e.g., anatomy and physiology, BUT in a way that you can apply in clinical practice. This background knowledge will assist you to understand why the eye reacts in the way it does. We also cover breed predisposition, which should be the first consideration of any eye case that you are seeing. This module will also cover the eye exam in detail, and what equipment you should have and when to use it.
  2. Applied ocular pharmacology, ocular emergencies, differential diagnoses
    In this module we start by covering ocular pharmacology, what drugs you should be using and when you should be using them. We also cover ocular emergencies – how to manage globe prolapse, corneal foreign bodies etc. We end this module with Differential Diagnoses.
  3. Ocular surgery
    Detailed notes, photos and, in most cases, videos of the common ocular surgeries are presented. These techniques are covered again in the workshop.
  4. Vision loss & ocular discharge - part 1
    What are the common causes of vision loss in young dogs, older dogs? What is the most common cause of vision loss in older cats? Module 5 also covers ocular discharge. How do you manage punctual atresia in dogs?
  5. Vision loss & ocular discharge - part 2
  6. The red eye: part I – conjunctivitis
    You will be much better at managing conjunctivitis cases in dogs, with its many causes, after completing this module.
  7. The red eye: part II – uveitis
    Inflammation of the eye is a serious condition. It needs to be recognised promptly and treated aggressively. Uveitis can have a number of sequelae–you will learn how to recognise these to minimise their occurrence.
  8. The cornea
    By the end of this comprehensive module you will be much more comfortable managing corneal ulcers, keratitis and other less common corneal diseases.
  9. The eyelids
    Topics in this module include entropion, ectropion, extra eyelashes, ectopic cilia and blepharitis.
  10. Blue eye – includes glaucoma, lens luxation and lipid aqueous
    Glaucoma is the primary topic in this module. You will learn why it is important to treat the remaining eye whenever you diagnose glaucoma in a purebred dog. Lens luxation and cataracts are also covered.

This distance education course includes an optional 2-day practical workshop in Melbourne VIC. Dates to be confirmed.

  • A 2-day practical workshop to apply the knowledge you have gained. You will get hands-on experience with eye examinations and surgeries and work through case studies and problem areas as a group

What is Distance Education?

All CVE Distance Education (DE) programs are mentored by leading veterinary experts who will provide individual feedback and advice on completion of each monthly module. Each module may include written content, technique videos, self-reflections, quizzes and online submission of monthly assignments.

Maximise the opportunity to expand and consolidate your learning by participating in the tutor moderated group discussion forum and attending the optional 2-day practical workshop to apply the knowledge you have gained. You will get hands-on experience with eye examinations and surgeries and work through case studies and problem areas as a group.

Pay as you learn

Choosing your DE course is a big commitment, so there’s no need to add further stress by paying your course up front. To pay as you learn, you will need a AU$1,000 deposit to secure your place, followed by 50% of the total course fee 10 days prior to course commencement date. We’ll arrange simple monthly direct debits from your credit card over 3 or 6 months.

Note: Payment Plan will incur an additional AU$250 administration fee, and Early Bird rates do not apply if you choose the payment plan option.
