VPOCUS: Practical Applications for GPs Distance Education

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) helps us make better clinical decisions, faster. In human patients, diagnostic confidence increases in 89.2 % when general practitioners add bedside POCUS to patient evaluation! By asking clinically relevant, often binary yes/no response questions, veterinary POCUS (VPOCUS) can be rapidly and efficiently learned and applied by anyone in any setting.

Expertly delivered by Dr. Serge Chalhoub, an internist, and Dr. Soren Boysen, a criticalist, blends diverse professional insights with a shared, engaging sense of humor. The course is designed to familiarise participants with the essential criteria for conducting a Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) examination. It provides a comprehensive overview of key protocols for abdominal, pleural, lung, vascular, and cardiac imaging. More specifically, it succinctly covers over 30 clinically-driven questions in these areas, demonstrating how each can be effectively addressed in 5 minutes or less, without compromising patient safety. This unique offering is a blend of expertise, practicality, and accessibility.

We are thrilled to introduce this NEW Distance Education (DE) course, which features the same distinguished tutors who expertly delivered the 'POCUS in Cats: Rapid Cage Side Scanning WebinarPLUS'. Given their proven success, expect similar excellence in our new DE course, as echoed in previous participants' testimonials:

It's difficult to teach ultrasound by webinar but the presenters did an excellent job.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe when and where POCUS is used in the clinical setting.
  • Discuss patient positioning for POCUS and how POCUS differs from consultative (traditional) ultrasound eg. abdominal ultrasound, echocardiography.
  • Perform abdominal POCUS including identification of free fluid, pneumoperitoneum, renal pelvic dilation and post operative ileus as well as calculating urinary bladder volume.
  • Perform pleural space and lung POCUS and gain confidence in identifying pathology such as pneumothorax, pleural effusion and lung parenchymal changes.
  • Perform cardiac POCUS and understand how this can be used to identify pericardial effusion and right and left-sided heart conditions.
  • Use POCUS to track response to fluid therapy.

Modules

  1. Fundamentals & abdominal POCUS
  2. Pleural space & lung ultrasound
  3. Cardiovascular POCUS
