Surgery Intensive: Practical Skills for GP Vet Workshop

Surgery Intensive: Practical Skills for GP Vet Workshop

This 2-day, hands-on workshop is designed for veterinarians who wish to expand their surgical skillset and confidently incorporate a wider range of soft tissue and orthopedic procedures into their clinical practice. The course emphasizes clinically relevant anatomy, step-by-step technique instruction, and practical tips to improve surgical efficiency and outcomes. Each procedure will be introduced through lectures that integrate case-based videos, followed by extensive laboratory time to allow participants to practice techniques under instructor guidance.

Day 1 will focus on canine procedures, including:

Salivary gland excision for treatment of sialocele
Laryngeal tie-back
Scrotal urethrostomy
Hand ligation splenectomy
Craniolateral approach for femoral head and neck excision
10-minute gastropexy technique

Day 2 will focus on feline surgical procedures, including:

Ventral bulla osteotomy
Nasal planectomy and pinnectomy
Perineal urethrostomy (in dorsal recumbency)
Ventral approach for femoral head and neck excision
Chest drain placement
Esophagostomy feeding tube placement

Participants will leave with practical, immediately applicable skills and increased confidence in performing these procedures in their own practices

Learning outcomes

By successfully completing this course, you will:

  • Perform a variety of advanced soft tissue and select orthopedic surgical procedures using evidence-based techniques and appropriate instrumentation.
  • Identify key regional anatomical structures relevant to each procedure and understand how anatomical relationships guide surgical planning and execution.
  • Apply proper tissue handling, suture selection, and instrument usage to optimize surgical outcomes and minimize complications.
  • Incorporate recent developments and emerging techniques in small animal soft tissue surgery into clinical practice.
  • Confidently plan and execute approach-specific surgical strategies, such as craniolateral or ventral approaches to the hip, based on patient needs and surgeon preference.
  • Recognize and troubleshoot common intraoperative challenges, implementing practical “tips and tricks” presented during the course.
  • Improve surgical efficiency through streamlined techniques (e.g., rapid gastropexy, hand-ligation splenectomy) while maintaining patient safety.

What is a workshop?

Highly practical - develop the confidence to implement your new skills on your return to work

Practical workshops are an ideal way to build confidence and competence in your skills, as you put theory into practice.

Ideally balanced combination of theoretical and hands-on education, our workshops allow participants to obtain the most benefit possible through practical application of the skills being taught. Small group teaching with a high tutor to participant ratio will ensure that you benefit from individual attention from your highly regarded and experienced tutor/s. Nothing beats on-the-spot feedback as you learn a new procedure.

Who should enrol?

This course is suitable for qualified veterinarians.
