Veterinary dentistry is a broad, constantly expanding and highly progressive discipline in veterinary medicine which has seen many changes in the last 20 years. Likewise, client expectations regarding their pets’ oral health and treatment have also changed, with more and more clients being actively engaged, and wanting to ensure that they are making the best decisions for their pets’ health long term. 

This course is created for passionate veterinarians who have a sound fundamental knowledge base and some practical experience in dentistry and who want to further advance their skill set to ensure they are staying current and providing the best possible care for their patients. 

 

Learning Outcomes

By successfully completing this course, you will:

  • Understand how to develop a structured diagnostic treatment plan for each and every dental case, from the initial consultation, to long-term post-operative management, including a thorough approach to the conscious oral examination, pre-anaesthetic considerations and pain management, with discussions around evidence-based homecare. 
  • Learn specific techniques regarding administration of local analgesia, as well as associated anatomic structures and how to minimise risks of complications
  • Learn the principles of how to take diagnostic dental radiographs, including positioning for success and troubleshooting common errors, and develop further knowledge in image interpretation for treatment planning. 
  • Understand specific orodental diseases seen in cats and dogs in a general practice setting, including chronic disorders that can be a “pain” to manage.
  • Develop a sound understanding of the principles of extraction, including equipment used and techniques, and how to treat commonly observed orodental conditions with minimal risk to the patient and reduce the likelihood of complications.
