Ferret ownership has changed considerably since their early days of domestication. Now, many households keep ferrets as much-loved pets and are considered cherished members of the family.
With ferret ownership continuing to grow, this rising popularity and perceived value has naturally driven an increase in clients seeking high standards of veterinary care for these animals. As such, it is important for veterinarians to understand how to examine and provide care for ferrets and to be familiar with the common conditions encountered in ferrets, including diagnosis and management of such conditions.
Ferrets are unique in many ways. It is easy to see why they make such popular pets; with their playful, energetic and quirky personalities, they make for endless entertainment. Additionally, they are often affectionate animals, forming strong attachments with their owners. Ferrets are also prone to a number of health conditions.
The aim of this course is to introduce veterinarians to some of the most common health conditions seen in ferrets with an emphasis on non-infectious diseases and the diagnosis and management of these conditions.
This course is suitable for veterinary students, new graduate and experienced veterinarians interested in learning about common conditions in ferrets as well as for those who wish to reinforce or expand their current knowledge on ferret medicine.
Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, you will:
- Conduct a comprehensive physical exam in a ferret and identify normal and abnormal findings.
- Identify common health conditions in ferrets.
- Formulate differential diagnoses for common conditions in ferrets based on history and clinical exam findings.
- Compare the diagnostic tests and treatment options available for ferrets and outline an appropriate diagnostic and treatment approach for common conditions.
Modules
- The physical exam and selecting diagnostic tests.
Module 1 describes the physical exam process in ferrets with reference to the typical historical and physical exam findings associated with certain conditions and a discussion of various diagnostic tests.
- Diagnostic investigation and disease management.
Module 2 will reinforce the information introduced in, and knowledge gained from module 1 with a focus on specific conditions, diagnostic approach and findings as well as appropriate treatment options for these conditions.
