Let Dr Karon Hoffmann work with you in an intensive, immersive 4-day course on Diagnostic Ultrasound. A visual discipline, Dr Karon Hoffmann has thoughtfully designed a program that will enhance your capacity to “think visually” so you can gain confidence and improve your scanning technique. Karon’s program off ers you essential foundational knowledge through her comprehensive theory sessions, complemented by hands on learning techniques such as kidney dissection and plasticine modelling of organs. On days two and four you will be able to put what you have learned in the classroom straight into practice as you hone your skills scanning live patients under the guidance of your expert tutors. At the CVE we follow strict ethical guidelines so scanning sessions with each dog are timed appropriately to ensure the animals in our care are comfortable and have a positive experience. Karon is known Australia-wide as the ?go to’ person for ultrasound as well as being a European Boarded Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. She will instruct and give you personal and immediate feedback on your scanning, and teach you tips and tricks that will make a huge diff erence when you get back to your practice. The decisions you make over those first critical minutes and hours can be the difference between a great outcome – or a terrible day. This practically-oriented course will allow you to brush up on your emergency management techniques and gain a deeper understanding of how treatment choices impact outcomes. Prioritising injuries in animals with multiple trauma, formulating fluid therapy plans, effectively performing CPR, placing a chest drain: all of these are skills that you need if you’re dealing with small animal emergencies. The packed program also includes a practical guide to transfusions in cats and dogs, treatment options for haemabdomen and managing respiratory distress. Analgesia and anaesthesia in the critical patient, identification and treatment of shock and toxicity management will all be discussed. If you deal with emergency cases, this course is a must. Description

Open reduction and internal fixation of fractures using bone plates and screws is a common and eff ective modality of treatment for fracture management in small animal practice. This workshop is designed to allow participants to use and appreciate the instruments employed to correctly and eff ectively apply bone plates and screws for simple fracture fixation in long bones. Principles of bone plating and screw application will be revised over a series of lectures with case studies used to highlight these principles. This will be followed with a practical session where participants will practice surgical approaches to the femur, tibia, humerus, and radius on a cadaver. Simple fractures will be created and all participants will have the opportunity to apply a compression and a neutralisation plate.

Description

This course is designed to teach participants the technical aspects of a variety of feline soft tissue surgery procedures. Some ?theory’ will be included in the lectures, but emphasis will be placed on ?how’ to perform each procedure. The instructor will utilize video clips of clinical cases that represent the procedures participants will perform in the lab. Surgical procedures will be performed immediately aft er viewing the video. Ideally, the videos will be viewed in the lab so no time is wasted between seeing the procedure and then performing it on the cadaver. Topics have been chosen that represent surgical conditions frequently seen in cats and include: nasal planum and auricular resection (pinnectomy), total ear canal ablation – lateral bulla osteotomy, ventral bulla osteotomy, perineal urethrostomy - a new approach and chest drain placement.
