Choosing to invest in further education after graduation is a big decision. With so many courses and providers available, how do you know which one is right for you? And once you commit, will it meet your expectations—and be worth the investment?
At the Centre for Veterinary Education (CVE), we understand that enrolling in a distance education course is a significant commitment of both time and money. That’s why we’re sharing Dr Penny Tai’s story.
Dr Tai has been practicing veterinary science in Taiwan since 1991. Eager to deepen his understanding of behavioural medicine, he enrolled in CVE’s Behavioural Medicine DE course. The experience was so valuable that he chose to take the course again.
Why return, you ask? Penny explains it best:
The course guides you and extends your knowledge and abilities to the maximum. The more you read, the bigger your vision will be.
And Penny’s vision has certainly expanded. Since first enrolling, Dr Tai has:
- Founded the Asia Veterinary Behaviour Medicine Association
- Launched PennyAcademy, offering feline behaviour courses to cat owners and trainers
- Delivered behavioural medicine training to dog trainers through Canine and Feline Behavioural Inc.
- He has even travelled the world in pursuit of further knowledge in behavioural medicine.
And now, in 2025, Dr Tai is back, not as a student, but as a mentor! He’s volunteering his time to support current participants in the Behaviour Medicine DE course, especially those who are struggling with assignments or research. Dr Tai explains that,
As someone from Taiwan, English is not my first language, yet I’ve managed to complete this course multiple times. I often tell students, “If I can do it, so can you.”
Dr Tai is passionate about the role of behaviour in veterinary practice:
I believe behaviour is one of the most important sciences every veterinarian should be equipped with. Understanding animal behaviour not only helps us address behavioural issues, but also improves how we manage everyday situations in general practice.
The Behavioural Medicine DE course is taught by an exceptional team: Dr Kersti Seksel, Dr Jacqui Ley, Dr Sally Nixon, Dr Isabelle Resch, and neurologist Dr Barbara Lindsay. Together, they offer a rich, multidisciplinary learning experience that supports both clinical excellence and career growth.
Whether you're new to behavioural medicine or looking to take your expertise to the next level, this course is your opportunity to expand your vision—just like Dr Tai did. His journey from student to changemaker is a testament to the value of lifelong learning and the impact one dedicated vet can have on a profession.
