Dr. Johnson earned her DVM and M.S. in Animal Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia and more recently completed an MSc from the University of Edinburgh in International Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law. She began her tenure with the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2009 as an Assistant Director in the Animal Welfare Division and was named Director of the same division in 2016. In her role she provides staff support for the AVMA’s Animal Welfare Committee and the Panels on Euthanasia, Depopulation, and Humane Slaughter. Dr. Johnson has published and presented on a variety of end-of-life and animal welfare education topics. She has also provided animal welfare expertise to the government of New Zealand and currently serves on: the OIE ad hoc committee reviewing chapter 7.5 and 7.6; the Animal Welfare Assessment Contest Advisory Board; and the United Egg Producers Scientific Advisory Committee.
