Feline Dentistry

This course will be a refresher on some of the basic dental techniques but will also focus on key feline-specific issues and techniques related to periodontal disease and extractions as well as key disorders.

Cats are not just small dogs and have unique dental requirements.

This course will also cover key disorders including feline tooth resorption, chronic gingivostomatitis, endodontic disease and malocclusions.

Each module has comprehensive course notes well-illustrated with clinical photos and videos. Practical tips are given throughout and a lists of recommended reading and references are also included in each section.

Learning Outcomes

By successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Review the principles of the basic dental exam and gain an appreciation of the need for radiography in feline patients

  • Gain an understanding of periodontal disease, its onset, treatment and management

  • Review the management of key feline dental disorders including, feline tooth resorption, feline chronic gingivostomatitis, endodontic disease and feline malocclusions

  • Learn to perform a range of extraction techniques

  • Understand and learn to deal with the possible complications associated with tooth extractions.

Course Delivery

This course includes:

  • Written notes, photographs, videos, case studies and journal articles

  • Self-assessed multiple choice quizzes to test your knowledge and understanding

  • A discussion forum for conversation, debate and information exchange with your peers and tutors

  • An electronic certificate available for download upon successful completion of the course

The estimated time to complete this course is 10 hours and it will be open for 4 weeks.

This program was reviewed and approved by the AAVSB RACE program for 10 hours of continuing education. Lisa graduated from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 1997 and worked in the UK since. She soon developed an interest in dentistry and pursued this to specialist level. She is a diplomate of the European Veterinary Dental College.

Lisa was the principal of a dedicated dental and oral surgery referral practice in Surrey before being diagnosed with motor neurone disease. She was involved with undergraduate and post graduate dentistry training and has published and presented papers both in the UK and internationally.

Lisa was also actively involved with International Animal Rescue and is still a trustee of the charity. She has travelled abroad to perform dental treatment at various projects and has over the past year spent time training others to continue this work.
