Shock & Fluid Therapy

This course is designed for all practitioners who want to maximize their use of fluid therapy; and for those who want to take the next step to developing skills in critical care medicine.

Fluid therapy is used daily in our practice. It is one of the cheapest treatments we offer, resulting in dramatic improvements in our patients. However, indications for fluid therapy use, other than rehydration, is often overlooked. 

As well as developing skills in critical care medicine, this course will help you develop an understanding of why electrolyte and acid-base balance is so important in our critical patients, and how we can manage these abnormalities with fluid therapy. In the final module, we will delve into transfusion medicine so you will be more confident in managing the next acutely anaemic patient.

Veterinary nurses with a special interest in the topic are welcome to enrol in this course. Please be aware that the course is designed for qualified veterinarians and you should consider this in light of your knowledge and experience before you register.

Learning Outcomes

By successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the physiology/pathophysiology of fluid dynamics in health and disease

  • Understand indications and contraindications of different fluid types, in order to the practice safe fluid therapy

  • Manage electrolyte disturbances in the critically ill patient

  • Develop a detailed understanding of transfusion therapy in the dog and cat.

Course Delivery

This course includes:

  • A set of written notes and photographs within each module

  • Self-assessed multiple choice quizzes to test your knowledge and understanding

  • A discussion forum for conversation, debate and information exchange with your peers and tutors

  • An electronic certificate available for download upon successful completion of the course

The estimated time to complete this course is 10 hours and it will be open for 4 weeks.

Duana McBride

BVSc DACVECC MVMedSc FHEA MRCVS

Duana McBride graduate from the University of Sydney, Australia in 2004 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, where she developed an interest in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine. After several years in general practice and referral emergency practice, she endeavoured to pursue her dreams by undertaking a residency program at Murdoch University, Australia, which was completed in 2013. She obtained her diploma with the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2013, alongside a Masters in Veterinary Medical Science (Murdoch University). Since 2013, Duana has been working as a lecturer in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine at the Royal Veterinary College in the United Kingdom, where she has a strong passion in clinical teaching and continued to develop her research interest in coagulation. She has a strong clinical interest in fluid therapy, coagulation, and acid-base/electrolytes.

Ryan Ong

BVSc (Hons) MVetStud MACVSc DACVECC

Ryan Ong completed his veterinary degree at the University of Sydney in 2001 and went on to do an anaesthesia internship and Masters in Veterinary Studies at the Camden campus the following year. This was followed by a stint in private practice in Melbourne followed by a rotating internship at the Royal Veterinary College in London. A developing interest for emergency and critical care led to a residency program at Murdoch University, before finally becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Ryan is one of the principal veterinarians at Western Australian Veterinary Emergency and Specialty.
