Advanced Echocardiography Workshop

This course is designed to give the participant a more advanced understanding of small animal echocardiography.

Major topics include in-depth cardiac anatomy and physiology, techniques for achieving high‑quality results, case presentations of important diseases and hands‑on scanning of normal dogs.

Skills taught in these hands-on sessions include pulse wave Doppler, continuous wave Doppler, colour flow Doppler, special measurements and calculations and applying the Bernoulli equation to clinical cases.

Requirements: This workshop is only available to individuals who have completed the Basic Echocardiography Workshop, or who can provide evidence of equivalent experience.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, a participant should be able to:

  1. Recognize normal cardiac anatomy from both the right and left parasternal windows
  2. Be able to have a basic understanding of Doppler echocardiography
  3. Analyse Doppler echocardiography studies, and recognize common pittfalls in Doppler echocardiography
  4. Apply 2D, M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography in such a way that animals presented with suspected heart disease can be investigated thoroughly.

DVM PhD Dipl. ECVIM-CA (Cardiology)

Niek Beijerink graduated with a veterinary degree from Utrecht University in The Netherlands. He completed a PhD (canine endocrinology and reproduction) in 2007 and then a residency in Small Animal Cardiology in 2010. He is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology). In 2011 Niek commenced working as a Specialist in Small Animal Cardiology at Sydney University and is responsible for the clinical service and teaching in this area. Some of his active research interests are heart failure therapy, cardiac CT imaging, and genetics of mitral valve disease. In 2018 Niek moved back to The Netherlands, while he continues to hold a part-time position at Sydney University. Niek is the tutor in the CVE Cardiorespiratory Medicine Distance Education course.

BVSc (hons) MANZCVS (Small Animal Medicine)

Mariko graduated from the University of Sydney with first class honours in 2007 and began working in a small animal general practice in Canberra. Since moving back to Sydney in 2009, she worked as an emergency and critical care veterinarian at referral clinics across Sydney. Mariko completed a rotating internship at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital in 2011 and subsequently obtained her membership in small animal medicine with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. She has an interest in the field of veterinary cardiology and, in 2013, commenced a PhD investigating therapeutics of canine and feline congestive heart failure under the supervision of Dr Niek Beijerink. Throughout Mariko’s PhD candidature, she has also worked with Dr Niek Beijerink in the cardiology service at the UVTHS.
