Anaesthesia & Analgesia: Fundamentals Distance Education

Mastering safety and efficiency in veterinary anaesthesia

The primary objective for veterinarians is to ensure the safest possible anaesthesia for their patients. Systematic preparation is key to minimising unexpected and often severe complications, thereby enhancing anaesthetic safety. This involves detailed planning across all four phases of anaesthesia: pre-induction, induction, maintenance, and recovery. Veterinarians must leverage their knowledge and skills effectively to make informed decisions and prepare meticulously for each phase.

This course deepens participants' understanding of relevant pharmacology, physiology, and pathophysiology in anaesthesia. It enhances their capabilities in patient monitoring, managing complications, and ultimately improves the quality and safety of anaesthetic procedures.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Devise a protocol, appropriate for your practice, for systematic preanaesthetic preparation aimed at minimising risk and optimising safety of anaesthesia.
  • Inform on inhalation anaesthesia equipment including on use, maintenance, testing, and patient appropriate setting up.
  • Rationalise the importance of perianesthetic monitoring including the choice of methods of monitoring based on understanding of respective advantages, disadvantages and limitations.
  • Competently and confidently manage common peri-anaesthetic complications through application of a systematic approach.
  • Apply sound understanding of the pharmacology of drugs commonly used for sedation/pre-anaesthetic medication, induction and maintenance of anaesthesia to justify anaesthetic drug protocols.
  • Rationalise the use of analgesics for pre-emptive analgesia, multimodal analgesia, and balanced anaesthesia.
  • Integrate analgesia into the anaesthetic protocols for the surgical patient.

Modules

  1. Anaesthetic equipment - correct use, application, interpretation of inhalation anaesthetic equipment, patient monitoring equipment, management of common complications
  2. Pharmacology and application of pharmacology in practice
