Vital Pulp Therapy: Small Animal Dentistry Workshop

This workshop will offer attendees, detailed knowledge, and the tools, to perform Vital Pulp Therapy (VPT) in a general practice setting.

The workshop will consist of lectures and a wetlab. Attendees will be able to perform the VPT procedure on extracted canine teeth, as well as radiographically monitor each step of the procedure. Tutors will be available to give one on one assistance during the wetlab component of the workshop.

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) involves the sterile amputation of around 6 mm of the coronal pulp.
Indications for VPT include crown height reduction of the maloccluded mandibular canine tooth, where there is trauma to the hard palate, or for recent traumatic crown fractures of a canine tooth, involving the pulp. The amputated pulp is then treated with medicaments that stimulate cells lining the pulp to lay down reparative dentine. The medicaments allow the remaining pulp to stay vital. A restoration is placed over the medicaments, to seal the tooth from bacterial ingress.

VPT works best in younger dogs (under 18 months of age) and is less predictable (according to limited studies), if performed >2 days post trauma. Short- and long-term radiographic monitoring of the procedure is essential. Visual and tactile monitoring of the restoration is also important.

Learning Outcomes

By successfully completing this course, you will:

  • Determine the indications/contraindications for performing VPT in dogs and cats
  • Understand the functions of the pulp and its response to injury
  • Have knowledge of the dental materials used for VPT
  • Understand the steps involved in performing a successful VPT procedure
  • Develop and implement review protocols to monitor the success of the VPT procedure

What is a Workshop?

Highly practical - develop the confidence to implement your new skills on your return to work

Practical workshops are an ideal way to build confidence and competence in your skills, as you put theory into practice.

Ideally balanced combination of theoretical and hands-on education, our workshops allow participants to obtain the most benefit possible through practical application of the skills being taught. Small group teaching with a high tutor to participant ratio will ensure that you benefit from individual attention from your highly regarded and experienced tutor/s. Nothing beats on-the-spot feedback as you learn a new procedure.

Who should enrol?

This course is suitable for qualified veterinarians.

Equipment requirements

iM3 and CVE will provide gowns, gloves, and all other consumables required for this workshop.
