Surgical Dentistry for Cats & Dogs Workshop

Friday, 26 June 2026

Speaker/s: Anthony Caiafa & Kayo Kuroda

Lane Cove

This event is fully booked

Workshops and Conferences

Description

Dentistry is a significant part of companion animal practice – and it’s becoming more so. Do you have the skills to confidently approach the surgical management of dental disease? Can you perform the procedures needed with efficiency whilst minimising complications to your patient? This is your opportunity to be mentored by leaders in the field and be individually guided on techniques and tips that will make your life much easier – and improve your clinical outcomes! Tony Caiafa is recognised as a leader with a capacity to empower vets with the skills they need in daily practice; he will be assisted by Kayo Kuroda, also a passionate educator. Beyond just surgical extractions, the canine workshop addresses what to do when complications occur (fractured a root lately, anyone?), the management of Odontogenic tumours and cysts, as well as pain relief and radiographic interpretation are all covered. And because cats are not just small dogs – particularly when it comes to dental disease – a whole day will be devoted to feline dentistry. Extraction techniques, gingivostomatitis (including full quadrant extractions), root resorption (crown amputation application and technique) and management of jaw fractures will all feature. Take the distress out of dentals for both you and your patient – this 2-day workshop is essential for any small animal clinician.

VPOCUS Workshop

Saturday, 04 July 2026

Speaker/s: Soren Boysen, Pamela Manning, Mark Howarth and Louis Eramanis

The University of Sydney

Hurry! Limited Places Remaining

Workshops and Conferences

Description

“When something is visualised, the truth of its occurrence or existence can no longer be doubted - Seeing is Believing”! This proverb has particular meaning when it comes point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS); diagnostic confidence increases in 89.2% of patients when general practitioners add bedside POCUS to patient evaluation! Recent surveys suggest 50-80% of veterinary clinics have an ultrasound machine. Unfortunately, despite POCUS revolutionising all facets of veterinary medicine, many ultrasound machines are underutilised in general small animal practice. This should not be the case! By asking clinically relevant, often binary yes/no questions, veterinary POCUS can be rapidly and efficiently learned and applied by anyone in almost any setting! So, dust off that ultrasound machine, go beyond looking for the urinary bladder to get a urine sample, and start using ultrasound to make a difference in in the daily assessment and management of your patients! Through practical, hands-on training using live dogs, participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice all of the common veterinary POCUS techniques currently used to assess the abdomen, pleural space, lung, and heart. Phantoms training models will also be used to demonstrate and practice ultrasound guided vascular access. This lab will focus on techniques developed by the instructors, designed to increase veterinary POCUS diagnostic accuracy, and help facilitate easier application into everyday veterinary practice. These are all techniques that can be performed by any practitioner and should be used in everyday practice! We will also briefly review basic ultrasound machine function and probe manipulations. As part of this workshop, an online learning component is required as a prerequisite to the lab. Participants must complete online lectures provided by Calgary, or complete the CVE’s VPOCUS: Practical Applications for GPs Distance Education course.

Mastering Otitis: Video Otoscopy Workshop

Sunday, 08 November 2026

Speaker/s: Callum Bennie, Sonya Bettenay and Stefan Hobi

The University of Sydney

Early Bird Rates Expire: 11/10/2026

Workshops and Conferences

Description

Chronic and recurrent otitis externa are among the most common causes of client (and clinician)  frustration in small animal practice. The ear canal has unique physical and anatomical properties which lead to a reduced response to otherwise effective “dermatologic interventions” and as such contribute to chronicity. The focus of the workshop will be on the interactive video otoscopy lab, where you'll receive small-group training in the use of video otoscopes for thorough ear canal examination, flushing, and myringotomies. The use of an ear canal model will allow you to practice flushing with different types of exudates and also perform a myringotomy multiple times to gain experience and confidence in the technique. Finally, an interactive, case-based discussion will highlight strategies to manage and prevent narrowing of the ear canal and review which medical interventions are appropriate for various stages of otitis.
